The collection of the Maine Irish Heritage Center Library contains over 2,000 volumes devoted to Irish history, art, literature and language. It includes books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs and CDs. The library has a strong genealogy collection consisting of city directories, year books, obituaries, St. Dominic’s school registers and on-line resources. The library and its staff preserves the history of the Irish in Maine with archival resources such as photographs, newspapers and family genealogies.
Please visit our Library Catalog to browse materials.
The Maine Irish Heritage Center Library relies on donations from the community. We are accepting Irish material especially books, DVDs and CDs. Donations may be dropped off during the library’s open hours or by appointment.
Anyone in the community is welcome to borrow library material. Library cards are free, just bring a valid ID to the library for borrowing privileges. While most of the material in the library does circulate, some of the rarer and more fragile items must be used in the library. Arrangements may be made to send material to library members outside of Portland.
We have the body of our collection in our digital catalog, and will soon have our music and movie collection ready to be checked out. We really appreciate all the wonderful material that has been donated!
