18th annual Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Memorial Service

August 19, 2018 @ 1:00 pm

The 18th annual Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Memorial Service at the Catholic Ground in Western Cemetery in Portland’s West End will be held Sunday August 19th at 1:00 PM. For those wondering what a Hibernian is, the Ancient Order of Hibernians is a national Irish-American fraternal society founded in New York in 1836 and in Portland in 1876.

The first Memorial service was held in August 1999 to celebrate the installation of a memorial to the more than 1,200 Irish Catholics buried in this location between the early 1830s and 1858, all but a few dozen without gravestones. The black marble stone was dedicated in memory of all the victims of an Gorta Mor, the Great Hunger in the Irish Gaelic language, a tragedy that occurred in Ireland between 1845 and 1851 in which over a million died and another million emigrated to all corners of the world, but especially to the United States, including Portland. The 1,200 Irish Catholics included immigrants from all over Ireland. Most of those interred here were young; hundreds were only infants or children of famine refugees. This was the only burial ground for local Catholics until the creation and opening of Calvary Cemetery in what is now South Portland in August 1858.”

A reception will follow at the Maine Irish Heritage Center where folks will be treated to a lecture by Dr.Patrick Mannion who will be discussing his recently published book “A Land of Dreams:Ethnicity,Nationalism and the Irish in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Maine, 1880-1923. Dr.Mannion’s talk will focus primarily on the Portland aspects of his research, discussing how Irish nationalist associations-from the Land League in the early 1880s to the Friends of Irish Freedom in 1920/21-thrived in the city, and how they connected Portland’s Irish Community to the broader Irish-American nationalist movement and to the transnational Irish diaspora well into the twentieth century.
